Week 24: Sunny Side Up

All crab fine dey hole.
- Trinidad & Tobago proverb

This week’s post is entirely inspired by the Carifest Parade that I photographed as a bystander on June 8th. It’s been a busy week, so my apologies for not sharing these photos any sooner.

The combination of vibrant costumes, upbeat music, and joyful dancing led to an incredible display of cultural pride! Couldn’t have asked for better weather either – the sun diligently served as a big blanket of warmth for all participants and bystanders.

Did I mention how awesome the music was? Even with my camera in hand, I (obviously) managed to dance a few beats.

The parade showcased the countries of St. Lucia, Trinidad & Tobago, and Haiti, to name just a few…

This photos in this post and the photography tip below are connected to the proverb I chose, “All crab fine dey hole.” In other words, everyone finds their place in life. While there are many factors that lead to one finding their place in life, I’m a believer that an important factor of doing so is through the act of having fun.

Photography Tip: Have fun! Yes fun… with a big, fat exclamation point! Majority of people enjoy photography as a hobby… but for those of us who turned their hobby into a career, we probably learned early on that “the fun” fades over time as “the work load” increases. In the pie chart of being a photographer, I spend less than 10% of the time actually photographing clients… and I admit, I’ve had a fair share of tough sessions and long editing nights that were a bit of a rude awakening (at first). The honeymoon phase came and went. And that’s okay because I wasn’t naive when I started my company. I continuously welcome the hard work and challenges this career requires. To help offset tough sessions and long nights though, I try to remind myself once a day why I became a photographer in the first place. And that’s because without a doubt, I am forever grateful that I’ve found my place in life, career-wise. Especially at such a young age. So my tip for all photographers is to have fun behind the camera, have fun meeting new clients, have fun scouting, have fun editing, and have fun sharing your art with others. Whether you’re a newbie or veteran, we’re all striving for the same fulfilment!
